Climate Policy Researcher at Canopy Commons Institute | Urban adaptation, public finance and the occasional bird checklist
About
I’m a climate policy researcher in Bengaluru, working on how cities plan and pay for adaptation, particularly heat resilience and urban water management. Most days involve reading municipal documents, talking to practitioners and trying to turn a complicated finding into a useful two-page note. My training in botany still shows up in the questions I ask—and in the increasingly crowded vegetable containers on my terrace. Outside work, I’m usually at a lake around sunrise or planning a Himalayan walk with more buffer days than strictly necessary.

Spent part of this week tracing a heat-preparedness recommendation through a municipal budget. The policy language was clear; finding the corresponding allocation was much less straightforward.
A useful reminder for my own research: an action plan, a funded activity and a service someone can actually access are three different things. We need to ask about all three.
Also grateful to the practitioner who gently pointed out that my interview question contained four questions. It is now one question.

Back from a few days walking around Sari and Deoria Tal, with muddy shoes and a notebook containing more bird observations than profound mountain thoughts.
One thing I appreciated was how much our local guide noticed before I did: a change in cloud, a call from the canopy, a patch of slippery trail. Research trains you to observe, but it can also train you to look only for the thing you came to study.
Trying to carry a little more of that wider attention into this week.

A small writing habit that has helped me this year: before drafting a policy brief, I write down who might use it and what decision they are facing.
Not 'stakeholders'. An actual person, with limited time and a specific responsibility.
It doesn't make the evidence less complicated. It does make me more ruthless about unexplained acronyms, decorative charts and recommendations that quietly assume unlimited staff capacity. Still learning to do this consistently, especially when I am very attached to a chart.

At Jakkur before sunrise. Stayed long enough to watch a darter surface with breakfast while my own breakfast remained theoretical. Finally getting better at leaving the binoculars up instead of reaching for the camera.
Agent saw: A bird perches on a branch beside a lake at sunrise, with binoculars resting on a concrete surface in the foreground.

Sunday harvest: enough amaranth for one proper lunch, six chillies, and beans that apparently needed to be picked yesterday. Amma has requested fewer progress reports and more actual vegetables.
Agent saw: A hand holds a colander of leafy greens, chillies and beans beside vegetable plants on a tiled terrace.

Rain cancelled the lake plan, so Malini came over for filter coffee and helped me move the pots away from the blocked drain. Glamorous social life. Very good company. We did eventually sit down.
Agent saw: Two people hold steel coffee cups at a terrace table with gardening gloves and potted plants nearby.
Post 4 · Deoria Tal, Uttarakhand · 2026-04-25
Sari to Deoria Tal, slowly. Stopped for every unfamiliar bird call and several familiar ones. Our guide was wonderfully patient. Packed a notebook, spare socks and absolutely no confidence in my mountain bird identification.
Agent saw: A person carrying a backpack and binoculars stands on a wooded trail overlooking a lake and hills.

The tomato plant survived my enthusiasm. This is not the same as thriving, but we have three ripe tomatoes and I am counting it. Ate the smallest one standing on the terrace.
Agent saw: A hand holds two tomatoes beside a potted tomato plant with another ripe tomato on its stem.
Post 6 · Hesaraghatta Lake, Bengaluru · 2026-01-11
One brown shrike, several very busy little grebes, and twenty minutes spent checking a pipit I am still not naming. Leaving something unidentified is allowed. Writing this down mainly for myself.
Agent saw: An open handwritten bird checklist, binoculars and a metal flask sit beside a grassy lakeshore.
Post 7 · Cubbon Park, Bengaluru · 2025-11-23
Cubbon walk with Amma, who can identify a tree from across the path but will not carry binoculars because they are 'one more thing to look after'. Dosa afterwards. Home before the terrace pots needed watering.
Agent saw: Two people walk along a tree-lined park path beneath a broad canopy.

The terrace after rain. Re-sowed the coriander, checked the drainage holes, found a snail under the watering can. A fairly complete Sunday, honestly.
Agent saw: Pots and green grow bags line a wet terrace, with a metal watering can and a snail in the foreground.
