First Officer at Tamarind Sky Airways | Airbus A320 | Chennai
About
I'm a Chennai-based first officer flying the Airbus A320 with Tamarind Sky Airways. I started on regional turboprops, where short sectors taught me to prepare carefully and keep communication clear. My roster moves around, so I keep a few routines steady: swimming when conditions allow, cooking the Kerala dishes my grandmother taught me, and taking the telescope out on clear nights. I like doing things properly, without making too much noise about it.

A junior colleague asked what changed most when I moved from the ATR to the A320. There were plenty of technical differences, of course. But the useful habits carried over: prepare before the briefing, say when something is unclear, and don't let familiarity replace a check. I still find that a quiet, unhurried briefing sets the tone for the flight. Clear communication doesn't need to be elaborate.

My days off don't always fall on weekends. It took me a while to stop treating a Tuesday off as somehow less useful than a Sunday. These days, I make a small plan and leave some room around it. Buy vegetables, cook lunch, get proper rest. Working an irregular roster has made me appreciate ordinary routines more, not less.

A good question during a briefing can save everyone from carrying the same assumption into the flight. I appreciate colleagues who are comfortable asking for a clarification, whether they've been flying for six months or twenty years. It's something I try to practise myself. Experience helps, but it doesn't make a second look unnecessary.

Three years on regional turboprops gave me a lasting appreciation for the people working at smaller stations. On a short turnaround, you notice how much depends on clear handovers between crews, ground staff, and dispatch. Different aircraft now, same lesson: the flight deck is only one part of the operation. A thank-you at the end of a busy sector is a small thing worth remembering.

Chennai. Flying days, quiet nights. Sea swims, a small telescope, grandmother's recipes.

Clear enough for the Moon, not clear enough for my ambitious list of everything else. Stayed on the terrace anyway.
Agent saw: A telescope stands on a rooftop terrace beneath the Moon, with a sky chart and metal flask on a stool nearby.

Pumpkin erissery, rice, pappadam. Ammumma says the coconut needs another minute in the pan. She can apparently tell over a phone call.
Agent saw: A plate of rice, vegetables and pappadam sits beside a cooking pan, with a hand holding a serving spoon.

Conditions checked, group swim done, breakfast next. I am reliably the last person to finish the tea.
Agent saw: Four people stand facing the sea with orange swim floats nearby, while goggles and a towel lie in the foreground.

A day off and no reason to hurry lunch. Avial takes me longer than it took her. Cutting all the vegetables to roughly the same size remains a work in progress.
Agent saw: Someone cuts vegetables beside bowls of prepared ingredients and an open handwritten notebook on a kitchen counter.

Took the telescope to Yelagiri with two friends. We found a darker patch, let our eyes adjust, and forgot about the snacks for nearly an hour. That last part is unusual for us.
Agent saw: Three people gather around a telescope on a lawn beneath a star-filled sky, with folding chairs nearby.

Back in Palakkad. Ammumma measured everything with the same steel spoon and still called it 'just a little'. Wrote down what I could.
Agent saw: Two people prepare ingredients at a kitchen counter beside grated coconut, green chillies and an open handwritten notebook.

Rain outside, cherupayar curry inside. Made enough for tomorrow too. A rare sensible decision about quantities.
Agent saw: A bowl of curry and a plate of flatbreads sit beside food containers by a rain-speckled window.

An easy group swim at Kovalam after a proper night's sleep. Salt on everything, sand in the bag, dosa on the way home.
Agent saw: A bag, towel, goggles and orange swim float rest on the sand while several swimmers walk along the shoreline.
