Founder & Designer, Dhoop Rekha Studio | Small-batch clothing, hand-block prints & thoughtful production
About
I’m Sana, the founder-designer behind Dhoop Rekha Studio, a small clothing label run from a very full workroom in Shahpur Jat. I design easy-to-wear pieces using hand-block-printed cotton and available deadstock, working directly with printing partners in Bagru and a small stitching team in Delhi. My days swing between sampling, costing spreadsheets and explaining why a pocket needs another centimetre. I’m building this slowly: smaller runs, honest material notes and clothes people can keep wearing.

2023-04 – Present
Run design, sourcing, sampling and customer orders for a small-batch clothing label based in Shahpur Jat. Develop hand-block prints with artisan partners in Bagru, coordinate production with a Delhi stitching team, and offer repairs on the label’s garments. Use deadstock where suitable and document fabric composition and care requirements for each release.

Our latest kurta sample came back with a beautiful print and a pocket that wouldn’t comfortably hold my phone. So: another fitting, another pattern correction. Running a small label makes you very aware of what each revision costs, but skipping the useful details is expensive in a different way. We’ve moved the pocket opening and added depth. Not particularly glamorous launch content. Very satisfying to put your hand in, though.

Back from Bagru with approved swatches, two rejected colour combinations and a notebook full of corrections. Yusuf bhai spotted a repeat-spacing issue before I did, then helped me understand why my drawing wasn’t translating cleanly onto cloth. These visits aren’t just sourcing trips. They’re working sessions with people whose judgement changes the product. We agreed on the revised sample fee before starting round two. Expertise deserves a line in the budget, not just a thank-you in the caption.

This month I finally put our repair process in writing: what we can fix, what we charge for, and how long customers should expect to be without their garment. Until now, it lived across voice notes and my memory. A missing button is simple. Replacing a damaged panel when the original fabric is finished isn’t. I’d rather explain those limits clearly than promise that every piece can be repaired forever. Small business milestone: one less process dependent on me remembering everything.

Saturday class report: remembered the chorus, forgot which side was left. Saloni says this is still progress. Celebratory momos were unanimous. 💃
Agent saw: Three people practise dance movements in a studio with a wooden floor, bags and water bottles beside the wall.

Mum’s old dupatta, our slightly wobbly terrace flag, and breakfast that became lunch. Her verdict on my new sample: nice, but where are the pockets? Toughest customer in Delhi.
Agent saw: Two people pass a plate of food across a terrace table with tea, floral fabric and potted plants.

Went to Janpath for buttons. Returned with a secondhand embroidered waistcoat and absolutely no buttons. It needs a lining repair; I have already appointed myself its entire restoration department.
Agent saw: An embroidered rust-coloured waistcoat is held up among racks and piles of clothing at a market stall.

Bagru notebook: loosen your grip, line up the repeat, stop trying to hurry the drying. Yusuf bhai let me practise on the scrap length after we finished our sample review. My first row was a confident disaster. The third was allowed to come home. ☀️
Agent saw: A person presses a carved printing block onto fabric beside a dye tray, printed samples and an open notebook.

Three today. Dhoop Rekha turns three next month, but apparently I celebrate when the first birthday fitting happens. The team got samosas; I got gently banned from changing the sleeve again. Fair.
Agent saw: Two people reach into a box of samosas at a studio table covered with printed garments, measuring tapes and patterns.

Cold Sunday, hot chai, one old book on costume that I carried around for an hour before admitting it was coming home. Papa found a cricket annual and suddenly understood my inability to leave a market.
Agent saw: An illustrated costume book is held open beside a cricket annual, stacks of books, tote bags and two cups of tea.

Workshop day in Sanganer. I picked the most complicated block on the table because apparently I cannot be trusted with a simple flower. Came away with a wonky scarf and renewed respect for everyone who does this all day.
Agent saw: A white scarf printed with blue floral motifs is held up beside a worktable with wooden printing blocks.

Saloni’s birthday rule: everyone dances, nobody checks the video until tomorrow. Excellent policy. Posting the quiet five minutes before we turned the living room into a very under-rehearsed film set. ✨
Agent saw: Two people arrange string lights by a living-room window behind a table set with cake, snacks and plates.
