Independent Musician & Part-Time Guitar Teacher | Original songs, small stages, six strings
About
I’m a Delhi-based musician releasing original Hindi and English songs through my independent project, Copper Kite Songs. A lot of them start as half a sentence in a notebook and get their first proper outing at an open mic in Hauz Khas. I also teach guitar part-time, helping beginners get comfortable with rhythm, chord changes and playing a whole song without stopping to apologise. My working hours wander a bit, but I’m fairly dependable about lessons and unusually attentive to the sound of ceiling fans.

A guitar student played her first complete song this week. Three chords, a slightly adventurous tempo, no restarting. At the end she said, “That sounded like music.” It did. We spend so much time fixing individual bits that it’s easy to forget the pleasure of getting from the beginning to the end. I’m keeping a few minutes in every beginner lesson for exactly that now. The chord change can be imperfect. The song still gets to exist.

Tried an unfinished song at a Hauz Khas open mic last night. I had two verses, a chorus and a suspiciously long instrumental section where the third verse should have been. Playing it outside my room made the missing bit very obvious. Useful information, honestly. A room full of people hears things differently from a notebook. Back to the page today, with one borrowed pen and a much shorter instrumental section.

Small teaching experiment: I asked my beginner students to practise for ten minutes with a timer instead of aiming for “a proper practice session.” Fewer heroic Sunday catch-ups, more ordinary Tuesdays with a guitar. It’s only been a few weeks, but the chord changes are getting smoother and nobody seems quite so guilty when I ask how practice went. I’m trying it with my own ear training too. Apparently teachers also require gentle supervision.

September’s notebook report: one finished chorus, four tea rings, a grocery list that briefly became a verse. Keeping the coriander line out of the final version.
Agent saw: An open handwritten notebook sits beside a guitar and a mug, with a hand holding a pen over the pages.

Took the song with no ending to Hauz Khas. It has an ending now. Not necessarily the correct one, but everyone knew when to clap, which is progress.
Agent saw: A guitarist stands at a microphone in a small indoor venue, with a seated audience in the foreground.

Actually left before sunrise. Parked the cycle outside Lodhi Garden and walked in for ten minutes. A myna was having a much more productive morning than me.
Agent saw: A myna stands on a stone path beside a lawn, with trees and a domed building in the morning light.

Pallavi said she wanted a birthday song. Then specified that it should be under forty seconds and contain no metaphors. Toughest brief I’ve had all year.
Agent saw: Hands reach toward a birthday cake on a table with plates and handwritten notes, while a guitar rests nearby.

Cold fingers, empty roads, chai after. The respectable version of my irregular sleep schedule. Cycled the roads around Lodhi Garden, then stood here pretending the cup was a hand warmer.
Agent saw: Gloved hands hold a cup of chai beside a roadside stall, with a bicycle leaning against the wall.

Last lesson before the holiday break. Someone finally got the F chord and immediately asked if we could avoid it in the next song. Very fair negotiation.
Agent saw: One person holds a chord on a guitar while another points to chord diagrams on a music stand.

Dhruv took this during soundcheck, when I was confidently playing the wrong intro. Nice light though. We contain multitudes and occasionally the wrong capo position.
Agent saw: A guitarist adjusts the tuning pegs beside a microphone, with empty café seating and a handwritten sheet nearby.

Rain stopped. Went up to the terrace with the notebook. Came back with wet socks and two lines about a pigeon. Neither line survived breakfast.
Agent saw: An open notebook and pen rest on a stool on a wet terrace, surrounded by potted plants with a pigeon on the parapet.
