Backend Engineer at Tallyfern Payments | APIs, payment reliability, and useful code reviews
About
I’m a backend engineer in Bengaluru, working on payment APIs and the systems that keep transactions moving when something inevitably times out. I like debugging messy problems, writing down what we learn, and helping junior engineers get comfortable asking questions. Most of my work is in Java, PostgreSQL, and Kafka, with a healthy suspicion of anything described as a quick retry. Outside work, I climb indoors, bake stubbornly mediocre sourdough, and disappear into the Western Ghats when the rain arrives.
Backend Engineer · Tallyfern Payments
2024-02 – Present
Build and maintain payment orchestration and reconciliation services using Java, PostgreSQL, and Kafka. Work on idempotency, webhook delivery, and incident tooling. Mentor two junior engineers through pairing sessions and code reviews, and help maintain the team's onboarding guide.
Software Engineer · Threadwell Commerce
2021-07 – 2024-01
Developed backend services for checkout, refunds, and order tracking. Improved integration tests around payment failures and helped move slow reporting queries out of customer-facing request paths.
Associate Software Engineer · Mossbyte Systems
2019-07 – 2021-06
Built REST APIs and internal support tools for inventory software. Learned production debugging, database migrations, and why a successful local test is not quite the end of the story.

A junior engineer asked why we store an idempotency key instead of just checking whether the payment already exists. We ended up drawing two simultaneous requests on the whiteboard, which did more useful work than my first ten minutes of explanation. Good reminder for me: start with the failure case, not the vocabulary. We've added that little diagram to the onboarding notes. My handwriting is now a production dependency.

Spent part of this week making a reconciliation alert less noisy. Not a new service, not a rewrite. Just separating records that genuinely needed attention from records that were still within the expected processing window. The useful bit was sitting with the operations team and watching how they investigated each alert. There were three clicks we could remove before we needed any clever engineering. Happy with this one.

Trying a small change in code reviews: if my comment needs a paragraph of explanation, I offer a ten-minute pairing session instead. We still write down the decision afterwards, but it avoids the strange situation where two people spend an afternoon politely misunderstanding each other in a thread. Not every review needs a call. Some definitely need fewer essays from me.

Updated our onboarding exercise this week. It now includes a webhook that arrives twice and one that arrives late, rather than only the very well-behaved happy path. The goal isn't to catch anyone out. It's to give new teammates a safe place to ask what happens next before they're looking at a real incident. Also removed a setup step that apparently only worked because of something installed on my laptop. Humbling.

Bengaluru. Backend things, climbing things, bread-shaped things. Usually taking the longer way home.

Changed exactly one thing this time: longer proof. Still slightly resembles a doorstop, but the middle is good. Pranav took half home, which I am counting as independent validation.
Agent saw: Hands place half a sliced loaf into a paper bag on a flour-dusted kitchen counter beside a bread knife and proofing basket.

Three sessions on this problem. Today I finally got the last hold, then forgot how to get down gracefully. Pranav has footage. Unfortunately.
Agent saw: A person reaches for a purple hold on an indoor bouldering wall above padded flooring.

Kudremukh, with a local guide and rain that kept changing its mind. Barely saw the summit view. Would still get up at that unreasonable hour again. Socks have entered a separate recovery programme.
Agent saw: Three hikers with backpacks follow a muddy path through green hills in thick mist.

Went out for milk. Came back two hours later with milk, damp shoes, and no particularly useful explanation. The trees were doing that very good post-rain thing.
Agent saw: A hand holds a bag containing milk on a wet, tree-lined residential street with parked scooters and scattered yellow flowers.

Keeping notes now because 'probably about this much water' has not been a successful methodology. Today's loaf: better crust, suspiciously flat. Ate two slices standing at the counter anyway.
Agent saw: A loaf and buttered bread slices sit beside kitchen scales, butter and a handwritten baking notebook.

Beginner wall, very non-beginner amount of thinking. Working on using my feet instead of trying to negotiate with gravity using only my arms. Coffee afterwards was considerably less technical.
Agent saw: A person climbs an indoor wall with orange holds, with climbing shoes and a chalk bag in the foreground.

Pranav asked where we were walking. I said 'roughly that way'. Somehow this became breakfast, a second coffee, and a lap of Lalbagh. Strong itinerary, would fail to plan again.
Agent saw: Two people walk along a tree-lined garden path beside water.
Post 8 · Chikkamagaluru, Karnataka · 2025-09-07
Wet weekend near Chikkamagaluru. We changed the walking plan when the rain got heavier and spent the afternoon on the homestay verandah instead. Hot coffee, cards, absolutely no mobile signal in my usual chair. Quite a good chair.
Agent saw: People play cards around a table with metal cups on a covered verandah overlooking rain-soaked greenery.
