Product Designer at Pennyloom | Consumer fintech, clear interfaces and fewer unpleasant surprises
About
I’m a product designer at Pennyloom, a Bengaluru-based consumer fintech startup, working on everyday money journeys. Most of my work involves making fees, payment states and next steps understandable without asking people to read a small novel. I like talking to users, working closely with engineers and finding the sentence that makes a screen simpler. Away from work, I make slightly uneven pottery in Indiranagar, sketch in cafés and run long distances at a pace that leaves plenty of time for observation.

We recently revisited a payment-pending screen at Pennyloom. The original version was tidy, but people still weren't sure whether they should try again. That's quite an important thing to be unsure about when money is involved. The useful change wasn't a new illustration. It was explaining what had happened, what hadn't, and when to check back—with the same wording in the support team's replies. A good reminder that interface design sometimes means getting three teams to agree on one unremarkable sentence.

Saturday pottery continues to be a useful corrective to spending the week moving things by two pixels. At the wheel, you can do everything you did last time and still produce a bowl with a new opinion about symmetry. You have to look at what's actually there, rather than what you meant to make. I wouldn't stretch this into a grand design framework. But being a beginner at something physical has made me less impatient with the messy middle of work. Also, I now own several pen holders that began as mugs.

Spent part of this week listening to support calls before sketching a new transaction-detail flow. People rarely describe their problem using our navigation labels. They say things like “it left my account” or “I don't know if I should wait.” Writing those phrases down helped us see what the screen needed to answer first. Research doesn't always need a large presentation to change the work. This time it needed a shared document, a few uncomfortable gaps in our current flow, and an engineer asking a very good question.

Bengaluru. Clay on Saturdays, slow kilometres on Sundays. Usually drawing the cup before drinking from it.

Four people, six bowls, no matching cutlery. Leela brought the beans, Dhruv brought dessert, I remembered the rice just before it became a separate architectural material. A good Sunday.
Agent saw: A dining table holds bowls of rice and other dishes, metal tumblers, and dessert, while a hand passes a serving bowl.

16 km, with a water stop and a brief negotiation with myself at 12. No pace screenshot because this is a peaceful account. Breakfast afterwards was the stronger performance.
Agent saw: An outdoor café table holds idlis, chutneys, coffee, a water bottle, and a watch beside a street.

Same corner table, different rain. Drew the window grille while my coffee cooled. The perspective is questionable but the grille has declined to comment.
Agent saw: An open sketchbook with a pencil drawing of a window grille sits beside coffee at a rain-covered window.

Picked up the little serving bowl today. The rim dips on one side, which turns out to be quite convenient for a spoon. Calling it intentional would be a stretch.
Agent saw: A person holds a pale glazed bowl with an uneven rim in front of shelves of ceramics.

14 km this morning. Went out early, finished less early. The last stretch was mostly a detailed internal review of breakfast options. Settled on dosa; excellent stakeholder alignment.
Agent saw: A runner moves along a tree-lined park path with several people farther ahead.

First trimming session of the year. Three bowls, one survivor. The survivor is currently drying under plastic and receiving an unreasonable amount of attention from me.
Agent saw: An upside-down clay bowl, two rough clay forms, trimming tools, and shavings sit on a workbench beside a pottery wheel.

Leela stayed for a second cup and let me draw her hands while she peeled an orange. A very patient person. The orange was finished long before the drawing.
Agent saw: Someone peels an orange beside two mugs and an open sketchbook containing drawings of hands.

The first mug I can comfortably drink from. Slight lean, generous handle, holds enough tea. It has cleared my very rigorous domestic testing process: using it every day for a week.
Agent saw: A ceramic mug filled with tea sits beside a sketchbook and a potted plant on a windowsill.
